Demetrius Andrade will face WBC interim super middleweight champion, David Benavidez, on November 25th, on pay-per-view, yet if he wins he doesn't believe that Canelo Alvarez will fight him next.
Andrade, who was a guest on Brian Custer's 'The Last Stand' podcast spoke candidly as he is in the middle of his training camp in San Carlos, California, as he is training at the SNAC Gym.
“I don’t know. [expletive] Canelo,” said Andrade about Canelo Alvarez. "Canelo, my hat goes off to him. He does what he does."
While Andrade anticipates victory over Benavidez, he is very clear in letting the world know that Canelo is going to do whatever is best for Canelo, and not always the sport. This seemingly has been doubled after Canelo's loss to Dmitry Bivol as some believe Canelo is exercising more caution than ever in selecting opponents.
Whether it was facing a smaller opponent in Jermell Charlo, or facing rather unknown fighters to the U.S. market in Rocky Fielding, Avni Yildirim, and John Ryder. Andrade doesn't seem to believe or have faith in the safeguards in place for boxing for such a fight to happen.
"[Canelo] has the luxury to do whatever he wants to do. You can’t tell me to go fight somebody, and I can name a bunch of fighters that you fought that haven’t fought nobody," said Andrade. "“Rocky Fielding, Avni Yildirim, [John] Ryder. Do you know what I’m saying? Ryder and some of these guys could be tough fighters."
Canelo's future plans as of now seem to involve Jaime Munguia, a former junior middleweight champion who has been moved back in terms of competition over the past five years. Andrade was on the same network as Canelo, DAZN, for years and couldn't land the fight. This was best seen in 2021 in when many top challengers avoided him, this was best brought to the forefront by Tim Bradley Jr when doing a segment with ProBox TV.
The winner of this fight has to rely on a WBC intervention, forcing a matchup with Canelo which many fight fans might see as improbable for Andrade.
“Therefore, cool. I fight, and beat David Benavidez, does that get me the Canelo fight," Andrade questioned. "I don’t know. We got to go talk to the higher-ups and figure out how to force it, but you can’t make two dogs fight unless they want it.”
Andrade heads into this fight as a two-division world champion, holding belts at junior middleweight and middleweight. The awkward southpaw has always seen something get in the way of his big fights but now has finally landed that achievement. Not only is a Canelo fight on the line, but a bit of Andrade's legacy is on the line as well.
